Making sense of worship: WHAT IS WORSHIP?

This blog is the first in a four-part series entitled Making Sense of Worship.

“Worship is the activity of glorifying God in his presence with our voices and hearts.” - Dr. Wayne Grudem, New Testament Scholar

As we approach the topic of worship, one thing is abundantly clear: we’re not merely speaking of the types of songs people sing, the instruments they play, or whether they clap, run, jump, sit or stand (although worship can involve all these things). If we’re to speak about true worship, it cannot be from our personal vantage point of style, preference, or experience. True worship begins with what God reveals about himself and the guidelines he sets for us to glorify him.

In John 4:23-24, Jesus makes some important statements to a religious woman from Samaria on this very topic of worship:

"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jesus cuts right to the chase on the issue of worship. Choosing to jump directly into the essence of what God desires, rather than arguing over the external specifics of worship.

Jesus tells us three very important things about worship in the above passage:

1) True worship is defined by God, not us.

2) True worship must be both spiritual and truthful.

3) God is looking for true worshippers who will engage him as he has defined.

We’ll talk about each of these points in the following posts.
