This blog is the third in a four-part series entitled Making Sense of Worship.

"God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” - John 4:24

In the Old Testament, God’s special presence could only be encountered in very specific places and, most often, at equally specific times. People would travel long distances in order to have the opportunity to draw near to God in worship. Throughout the history of God's people we see these special times and places highlighted; the tent of meeting, the tabernacle, Solomon's Temple, and the list goes on.

However, Jesus tells us that "God is spirit" and because he is spirit he cannot be limited to one specific place or time. This is important to understand because we can often make the mistake of trying to associate the worship of God with a particular time, place, and/or experience. True worship is spiritual which means that our attempts to put God in a box inevitably fail because he must be worshipped as he is - in spirit.

"The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man.” - Acts 17:24

If God is spirit and cannot be limited to structures that we create, then how can we know that we are truly glorifying him in worship? As mentioned before, worship begins when God reveals himself to us. He does this by the Holy Spirit through the scriptures.

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” - John 17:17

Sanctify is a word which means to be set apart as sacred or holy. As we spend time understanding and obeying the truth of God’s word, our hearts are set apart as a sacred place of true worship to Him. Therefore, the truth of God’s word is the gateway to true worship.

Spend some time this week reading, singing, and praying through the book of Psalms. Commit to journal about things that God reveals to you about himself.
