Making sense of worship: GOD DEFINES TRUE WORSHIP

October 7, 2015

This blog post is the second in a four-part series entitled Making Sense of Worship.

"We must never rest until everything inside us worships God.” - A.W. Tozer,  Pastor & Author

Worship is impossible without a target, and for every Christ-follower, God is the target of worship. Just as an archer draws back his arrow intently focused on the bull’s-eye, the hearts of true worshippers should be carefully aimed toward God.

God defines worship for us because sin has ruined our ability to see the target and to hit the bull’s-eye.

We all would be left groping in the dark forever if not for God revealing himself to us and marking off the boundaries of true worship. Once our hearts are turned to God through faith in Christ, God then empowers us by the Holy Spirit and teaches us through the scriptures how to effectively direct our hearts toward Him.

"I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules.”  - Psalm 119:7

God defines the rules of engagement for true worship. And how we respond to what he has defined ultimately determines whether or not we are true worshippers.

Jesus was the greatest worshipper to ever live. Looking into the life of Jesus gives us the best possible example of what true worship is. Every moment of Jesus' life was God-defined and filled with glory and honor to God the Father.

In the same way, our ultimate goal as true worshippers should be to please God by offering back to him all that we are and all that we have, in response to what he has made known of himself to us. In doing so, we grow in loving communion with our Redeemer being strengthened by grace and filled with joy inexpressible.
